Metres(米,公尺) from one of the busiest runways(飛機跑道)in the world lies a cluster(一串,一群,一組) of trailers(拖車) and motorhomes(露營車). Parking(停車場) Lot B at Los Angeles(洛杉磯) Airport is home to around a hundred pilots(飛行員), mechanics and baggage handlers(機器技師和行李員). Faced with job cuts and lower wages, many must now go where the work is.
Dana Hayes: "Come on in." Rajesh Mirchandani: "Thanks a lot. So this is home?" Dana Hayes: "This is home."
Every week Dana Hayes, a mechanic
in his fifties, leaves his wife at their large home a thousand miles away. His
small trailer offers cheap living - just $60 a month. Renting(租房) a
room nearby would be at least ten times(10倍) that.
Dana Hayes: "It's tough(艱苦的) sometimes. You know, it's... It's better than paying rent, you know. At least
you can put a little money aside for retirement(退休) or
something."
In recent years the US airline industry has
shed(去除) thousands of jobs and lost billions of dollars. Fears of
terrorist(恐怖主義) attacks, rising fuel(燃料) costs and a deep recession(經濟衰退) have hit
hard. Even at the pinnacle, some feel the
squeeze. Airline captain(機長,首腦) Bob Poster is one of at least four pilots
living in Lot B.
Bob Poster: "It's just... There's been a decline in... I
think in our status, our pay, our benefits and it's just... I think it's
world... the world economy, world economics, it's just... Everything is
flattening out(使變平)."
Airline jobs once brought(bring) respect and envy. Now many are just glad(愉快) they
are working.
